FACE TAPPING FOR SKINCARE: UNLOCKING YOUTHFUL, RADIANT SKIN NATURALLY
Face tapping is an ancient acupressure-inspired technique and is rapidly gaining attention as a holistic skincare approach. This method of gently tapping specific points on
There’s no doubt that clean beauty is the trendy way to look after your skin. But behind the trend is the scary reality that most personal care products contain chemicals that are so toxic, they could cause cancers, organ damage and disrupt your body’s natural hormonal balance with terrifying consequences.
In particular, there are twelve chemical ingredients dubbed by clean beauty enthusiasts as the “Dirty Dozen” that are shockingly prevalent in mainstream personal care products. Despite their apparent dangers, a recent Canadian study found that 80% of the products tested contained these toxic chemicals.
While many beauty products consist of ingredients that are hard enough to pronounce – let alone memorise – you’ll certainly benefit from saving this list of the Dirty Dozen to refer to before your next beauty haul.
These antioxidants are used as preservatives in beauty products such as makeup, creams and, beyond that, even food. This is despite being a probable carcinogen, hormone disrupter and cause of liver and kidney damage.
These appear as p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as “CI” followed by a five-digit number. These chemical pigments give cosmetic products their colour, despite the fact that they are a known carcinogen and may even cause brain damage.
DEA as well as MEA and TEA are found in a great variety of beauty products and have been linked to cancer.
Phthalates are another type of dirty chemical gaining attention in mainstream media. Found in fragrances, hair products, nail polish, and more, they may cause birth defects and disrupt the endocrine system.
These include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, bromopol and glyoxal (Source). Formaldehyde is a known cancer-causing chemical and is also linked to adverse skin reactions
Probably the best known of the Dirty Dozen, parabens are linked to cancer and skin damage. Look out for butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben on the label – these are all parabens.
Parfums can consist of up to 3000 chemical ingredients or more! Since brands aren’t obliged to disclose what goes into their fragrances, they can add any number of harmful chemicals to them including parabens, hormone disrupters and allergens. Some chemicals may even lead to cancer or neurotoxicity!
PEGs often contain measurable amounts of carcinogens. They’re found in creams, hair products and deodorants as well as creamy cosmetics like foundation.
Found in hair care products, cosmetic and skincare products, products containing petrolatum may be contaminated with substances such as PAHs that are associated with cancer.
These used to make beauty products smoother, softer and creamier. However, these toxic chemicals are known endocrine disrupters and may cause fertility issues.
This foaming agent often found in hygiene products can cause skin irritation. It’s also been linked to cancer when reacting with certain other chemicals.
Triclosan is a hormone disrupter. There is also significant evidence that is may cause liver damage. Triclosan is found in antibacterial products like soaps and deodorant.
Avoiding the Dirty Dozen may be the best thing you ever do for your health, but that doesn’t have to come at the cost of beautiful skin! Choosing certified clean beauty products that contain no harmful chemicals is your best option. Make sure they are clinically proven to ensure effectiveness as well as safety.
